State-owned Telekomunikasi Indonesia, the nation’s largest telecomunications company, plans to launch a mobile chatting application and boost its Internet service speed in a bid to tap more subscribers, a company executive said on Sunday.
Muhammad Firdaus, deputy executive general manager for commerce at Telkom Flexi, a mobile division of Telkom, said on the sidelines of a workshop in Bali on Sunday that the company was prepared to debut Flexi Messenger.
He said the application would help Telkom Flexi achieve its target of a 20 percent to 30 percent increase in its subscriber base.
The division currently has 18 million subscribers.
As for its Internet business, Firdaus said the company would improve FlexiNet’s network quality by upgrading its technology in 10 large cities. “The base transceiver stations that exist in the 10 cities will be installed with new technology so that we can provide faster Internet service. This is one of our efforts to boost data subscribers,” he said.
The cities are Jakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Banjarmasin, Makassar, Denpasar, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Pekanbaru and Medan. FlexiNet’s current subscriber base is one million people.
Eddy Kurnia, Telkom’s head of corporate communication and affairs, said the company is keen to boost contributions from a number of subsidiaries it acquired in previous years as part of a plan to diversify revenue sources. Among the companies it acquired were Sigma Citra Caraka, AdMedika and Mojopia.
Telkom is also establishing a joint venture with SK Telecom Co., a South Korean mobile carrier, to develop digital music.
“The aim of acquisition in Telkom’s new-wave business is to create business opportunities, especially in the business that is based on IME [Information, Multimedia and Edutainment],” Eddy said.
