Disadvantaged Regions Ministry is focusing on accelerating the development of 27 Indonesian regencies bordering on foreign countries.
Ministry Secretary Lucky Hary Korah said the 27 regencies were chosen from a total of 38 regencies, most of which are underdeveloped, sharing borders with Indonesia's neighbors.
“No inhabitants of boundary areas should feel neglected, especially if the areas border on those of more developed countries,” Lucky said in Maluku, the capital of Ambon, as reported by tempointeraktif.com on Thursday.
Lucky made the statements on Wednesday evening while concluding the coordination meeting on the acceleration of development of border areas.
He said the ministry was targeting to improve the region’s infrastructure, education and healthcare access, among other things.
“We need to be able to access isolated areas,” Lucky said.
Among the targeted regions are Aru Islands regency in Maluku and Belu,
Alor, Sangihe Islands, Sambas and Nunukan in East Kalimantan.
